TREATMENT FOR BABIES DURING FIRST FEVER

Baby is very precious and if it falls sick it is really scary. To solve
problems like fever and ear ache which is common in babies the following
tips help. Night cry is common in babies which many be due to ear ache,
fever or cold. It is really frightening to see the baby crying and the
reason for it is difficult to find, so certain checks can be checked before
calling the pediatrician.
The first thing to do is to check the temperature of the baby with an
accurate thermometer. First the thermometer should be cleaned by rinsing
in hot and soapy water and dipping in alcohol. The thermometer should
be lubricated with petroleum jelly and then the baby should be positioned
between the legs with face down and the thermometer is inserted gently
by spreading the buttocks. If the baby is quiet the thermometer can be
placed for a minute but if the baby is restless half a minute is enough
but the timing should be informed to the pediatrician. The modern doctors
feel fever is helpful in fighting infection in babies hence it is not
frightening if the baby has fever. Six months old babies of fever from
101degrees F or 103 degrees F may be treated at home itself and carefully
observing for one full day. The doctor should be informed if the temperature
goes above 104 degrees. For persisting fever or goes up and down again
and if the baby is sick other symptoms like vomiting, rash, cough, runny
nose or difficulty in breathing will be notices apart from fever. Some
babies have behavioral changes like pulling on ears, crankiness, decrease
or augment in appetite and sleep, lethargy, If so proper diagnosis has
to be done. Certain conditions mentioned below are considered as toxic
and severe illness and so treatment has to be started immediately.
Sucking problem for 2 or more successive feeds
Finding it difficult to cry in the usual lusty, strong manner
Not calmed by feeding or holding and getting irritated for long hours.
It is advised to have some baby acetaminophen which is recommended for
fever. Aspirin is not recommended for children as if has link with Reye’s
syndrome which a life frightening condition and fatal illness due to fluid
imbalance which produces swelling of brain and kidneys. It is better to
consult the doctor before giving any medicine to the babies.
Special care should be given to the babies and each and every activity
of the baby should be noted carefully as the baby can not express the
feelings it is the mother’s duty to help the baby by finding what the
real matter could be. Mother is the best judge for the baby.
