Antibiotics are helpful to knock out the bacteria from strep throat,
ear infections and other diseases so the children get better quickly.
Although antibiotics are helpful to cure they should be used carefully
and if misused may lead to antibiotic resistance in which the some bacteria
become irresponsive to antibiotics. The antibiotics ought to be used carefully
and safely. The seven ways given below will be very helpful to accomplish
that.
1 It should be realized that antibiotics help to cure certain infections
like step throat or ear infections but viral illnesses like flu or cold
do not have any effect by using antibiotics
2 Pressuring the pediatrician to give antibiotics believing that is the
only way to cure the child is wrong. The doctor knows better and if he
explains that the child has viral infection for which antibiotics do not
respond understand and react accordingly without pressurizing him.
3 If any improvement is not found even after taking antibiotics then the
doctor should be consulted. The particular drug may be defiant to the
particular bacteria the child has. Some times the viral infections may
precipitate bacterial infection. In such cases the pediatrician prescribes
antibiotic since the one prescribed for viral infection may not control
bacterial infection.
4 The medicine should not be stopped if the symptoms in the child disappearss.
The medicine should be continued otherwise the bacteria may gain strength
again.
5 Correct doses of antibiotics should be given as indicated by the doctor.
The medicine should be stored properly and the dosage should not be missed.
6 Antibiotics given for earlier illness or for somebody else should not
be used.
7 Allergy symptoms like puffy lips, hives, trouble breathing may be due
to drug allergy and hence the medication should be stopped immediately
and the doctor consulted.
While the baby is under antibiotics proper diet should be given. The diet
should contain either liquid diet or easily digestible solids. The babies
can not express their feelings in any way express by crying and hence
proper care should be taken by the mother and treatment started immediately.
